Exhibitions at Darlings, Sydney and New York:
From Sydney to New York, Darlings Gallery has presented a series of unforgettable exhibitions.
Here are three notable exhibitions, each reflecting the gallery's unique mission to offer immersive experiences and introduce new voices in the world of contemporary art.
Horse Girl featuring Ella Burke, Wolfgang Saker, Alexandra Jonscher, Genna Howard, Dean Qiulin Li, and Meg Spectre
Immersive exhibition Horse Girl showcased a series of large scale works by Australian artist Ella Burke, with other commissioned pieces by Australian and American artists such as photographer Dean Qiulin Li and New York performance artist Meg Spectre.
The show was presented at Puzzle Art Garage in Sydney in 2023 and curated by Gregory Uzelac.
The exhibition explored themes of nostalgia, youth, and the complexities of memory through vibrant and symbolic works that blend 2000s iconography with personal and cultural narratives.
Burke’s art, characterized by its playful yet unsettling examination of childhood memories, invited viewers to reflect on the tension between innocence and the darker undercurrents of growing up.
The 2023 exhibition was a collaboration between Darlings Gallery and Puzzle Art Garage, transforming the venue into a space that echoes the liminal experience of adolescence.
Dean Qiulin Li Those Stubborn and Romantic People
Li's photography seamlessly blends an anthropological and topographical approach to portraiture, where texture and form take center stage.
In his latest collection of photographic works, Li has brought together a menagerie of glimpses, each plucked from the routines of those closest to him.
When siloed, these windows into the lives of friends, fellow artists, and loved ones serve as speculative entry points into individual existences, connected, it seems, only by Li and his camera.
However, brought together, not only as images on walls but as alluring points of curiosity, Li’s works duplicate his own sense of community and camaraderie, inviting everyone to join his gathering of those stubborn and romantic people.
Broken Armor: Redhook
Broken Armor: Redhook is an evocative exhibition held at Darlings Gallery, featuring the powerful works of artists Alexandra Jonscher, Genna Howard, and Wolfgang Saker.
The exhibition delves into the themes of vulnerability and resilience, using the metaphor of "broken armor" to explore how individuals navigate their personal battles and the scars that result.
Through a mix of painting, sculpture, and digital media, the artists present a raw and honest portrayal of the human condition, highlighting the beauty that can emerge from brokenness.
The site-specific exhibition was staged in the industrial Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York during the Armory Show 2023, providing an alternative backdrop during the fair week.
5 Artists to Watch from Darlings Gallery, New York & Sydney
We have selected 5 Artists from Darlings Gallery Program and dive deeper into there worlds.
Wolfgang Saker , Genna Howard, Alexandra Jonscher, Gregory Uzelac and Joshua Heath
Wolfgang Saker: Blurring the Line Between Physical and Digital
Wolfgang Saker (b. 1997 in Sydney, Australia) uses painting, digital technology, multimedia, and the moving image to focus on the shrinking difference between the corporeal and the digital and how the absurdity of the internet is leaking into earth.
Frequently incorporating figurative elements, text, and surreal nonlinear storytelling, Saker's satirical works draw upon virtual reality, social melancholia, and popular online culture.
Through the creation of nonspecific, yet mesmerising avatars, Saker's works ultimately pose a question to us all: Does it matter if we are corporeal or virtual to be real?
Genna Howard: Exploring Intersectional Themes Through Multidisciplinary Art
Genna Howard is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY, with expertise in painting, tattoo art, and ceramics. Their work often delves into intersectional themes and features "flash" designs, primarily rendered in watercolor.
Drawing inspiration from her upbringing in Uptown and her current residence in Park Slope, Howard's art reflects a deep connection to her environment.
In addition to their visual art, Howard is also a passionate bird enthusiast. Howard's work has been featured in several group exhibitions, including "BOY* STUFF" and "Broken Armor" at DARLINGS Gallery in 2023 and 2024.
