This Weekend’s Pick: Ibrahim Mahama’s Zilijifa at Kunsthalle Wien
Some works stop you even before you’ve seen them.
Ibrahim Mahama’s Zilijifa at Kunsthalle Wien feels like one of those.
A train on a mountain of metal bowls. The weight of history held together by hands.
A full-size locomotive resting on thousands of rusted metal bowls, the kind used in Ghana to carry bricks, food, everything that needs moving.
Each one used, exchanged, dented. Each one carrying a life behind it.

It is absurd and perfect. Industry balanced on domestic labor, history balanced on hands. You can almost hear the weight shift.

We love when art holds the heavy things the world prefers to forget, when it reminds us that beauty can carry memory too.
We will get there. You should too.
