When everyday order collapses

Ivan Volkov – Sculpture, Painting, Land Art

Ivan Volkov works across sculpture, painting, land art, and performative actions that persist primarily through photographic documentation. His practice emerges from lived proximity to instability, migration, and precarious social conditions. Rather than narrating critique, Volkov constructs situations where normality begins to malfunction under its own weight.

Across snow sculptures, carved figures, and temporary interventions, Volkov applies a strategy of deliberate misplacement. Familiar forms appear altered just enough to feel unreliable: snowmen that bleed, animals assembled in uneasy collectives, monuments that resemble waste or residue rather than authority. These works do not function symbolically, but structurally. They expose how thin the surface of social order really is.

Material choices remain direct and unsentimental. Snow, raw wood, plaster, and found structures are used without refinement or theatrical framing. Temporality is essential. Many works are designed to melt, decay, or be dismantled, leaving documentation as their only stable form. This ephemerality mirrors the conditions Volkov addresses: systems that promise durability while offering none.

Volkov’s work has been shown in galleries and public spaces across Russia and Europe, including Paris and London. These contexts matter not as markers of career progression, but as evidence that the work remains legible across political and geographic pressure zones. His practice does not resolve tension. It holds it, exposes it, and refuses to smooth its edges.

Volkov’s practice extends beyond individual authorship:

Together with Iuliia Skromnaya and Misha Gudwin, he is a co-founder of Emergence Space, an initiative operating between exhibition making, collective production, and situational experimentation.

The work does not resolve tension. It holds it, exposes it, and refuses to smooth its edges.
