At first glance, Florian Donnerstag's paintings exude a dynamic energy, practically pulsating with tension and even a touch of unrest. The raw, unprimed canvas adds to this overall impression. Like color blocks in an all-over painting, his motifs interweave across the canvas, refusing to dictate a specific reading direction. This deliberate lack of guidance may initially overwhelm the viewer, but it's precisely this challenge that Donnerstag embraces.
Our latest find is Florian Donnerstag, a painter originally from Austria, now residing in Munich, Germany. He's an emerging artist and comes highly recommended by Munchies Art Club magazine for a must-follow Instagram account
Artist Statement:
Florian Donnerstag, born in 1990 in Mondsee, Austria, initially pursued architecture studies in Innsbruck, culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree by 2015.
In parallel with his architectural education, he immersed himself in the realms of contemporary art and art history.
Since 2017, his educational journey continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he delved deeply into the realms of painting, drawing, and graphics under the mentorship of Prof. Markus Oehlen. Since 2023, he has been enrolled in Prof. Andreas Breunig's class.
Donnerstag's work is characterized by narrative fragments that depict a reflection of our present time. The artist grapples with the ambivalence between form and design.
One of his goals is to immerse the viewer in a rollercoaster of emotions, where the boundaries between seriousness and levity blur.
Through his exploration of core themes such as deconstruction, metamorphosis, drama, and humor, Donnerstag aims to create a dynamic equilibrium, both in terms of content and in the realm of painting.
